LIVEThe US Treasury Department recently sanctioned two crypto platforms, Shelbit and Aban Tether, accusing them of facilitating billions in illicit transactions for entities linked to the Iranian government. Officials say these platforms acted as a bridge for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to move funds outside the reach of traditional banking systems.
While Shelbit presented itself as a standard exchange, blockchain analysis reveals a different story. Between May 2024 and March 2026, the network processed over $6.3 billion, yet rarely held onto any assets. Instead, the platform functioned as a high speed relay service, using thousands of rotating wallet addresses to move funds quickly across the Tron network. Most of this volume relied on USDT, allowing users to settle dollar denominated payments without interacting with sanctioned correspondent banks.
The investigation also uncovered a significant connection to Russia. Records show that Shelbit moved roughly $318 million through the A7 payment network, an entity designed to help Russian businesses sidestep Western financial sanctions. This link highlights how illicit actors are using stablecoins and blockchain technology to connect sanctioned economies.
This crackdown underscores the increasing ability of US authorities to enforce sanctions directly on public blockchains. While the platforms used address rotation to hide their tracks, they could not escape the oversight of blockchain analytics firms. For the broader market, this serves as a clear indicator that stablecoin issuers and regulatory bodies are becoming more aggressive in freezing funds used to bypass international law.
