Hyperliquid Perp Crash Wipes Out $57M in SK Hynix Trades

LIVEA wild price swing in a South Korean pre market session caused the SK Hynix perpetual contract on the Hyperliquid network to crash by 17.9 percent on Tuesday. The event wiped out $57.4 million in long positions across 960 accounts. While the numbers were steep, a built in price guardrail prevented the contract from falling even further after an erroneous price print suggested a much larger 28.7 percent drop.
The volatility stemmed from an unusual order placed on NXT, a secondary South Korean trading venue that operates outside of standard exchange hours. This rogue data point fed directly into the contract oracle. Because the market for SK Hynix was already under pressure from a broader selloff in Korean tech stocks, the automated system treated the corrupted price as legitimate, triggering a chain reaction of liquidations.
Hyperliquid officials clarified that they did not operate this specific market. The contract was managed by a team called Trade.xyz under a framework known as HIP 3, which gives independent operators control over their own price feeds and oracle inputs. Hyperliquid acts as the underlying blockchain infrastructure, but it does not oversee the day to day management of these third party markets.
Traders are now looking at whether the operator will face penalties. Validators have the power to slash the 500,000 HYPE tokens staked by the market deployer, but current rules suggest that any burned funds would not be returned to the liquidated users. With SK Hynix earnings reports approaching, the community is watching closely to see if the market protocols can withstand higher trading volumes without repeating this incident.
