LIVEHedge funds have finally turned bullish on Bitcoin, making their first net long bet on Chicago Mercantile Exchange futures in a long time. These professional traders usually rely on a market neutral strategy called the basis trade, which keeps them net short by design. By moving to a net long position, these investors are signaling that they expect Bitcoin prices to head higher in the coming months.
However, there is a catch. While these professional traders are taking a position on paper, other indicators suggest that actual buyers are not following suit. The Coinbase Premium Index, which tracks whether US investors are paying more for Bitcoin than global traders, remains in negative territory. This shows that institutional buying of physical Bitcoin is currently very soft.
Market data also reveals that open interest, which counts the total number of active futures contracts, remains near its lowest point of the year. With only 23 billion dollars in open interest compared to 48 billion last October, there is not much new capital flowing into the market. This suggests that the current futures activity is not enough to spark a massive rally on its own.
For now, the market is at a standoff. The hedge fund bet is a clear signal that the suits are feeling optimistic, but the lack of spot demand and low open interest create a ceiling for the price. Traders should watch for a shift in the Coinbase premium or a significant spike in open interest to confirm whether the rest of the market is ready to join this bullish move.
