Eri Guzman Ortiz of Miami has pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud after investigators uncovered a scheme that siphoned $14 million from thousands of individuals and businesses. Ortiz admitted to creating fake companies and depositing fraudulent checks into accounts he controlled to make the unauthorized withdrawals appear as legitimate transactions.

Court documents reveal that Ortiz obtained lists of victims from a contact in Canada. These victims had no prior relationship with his sham companies and never authorized any charges. The operation was designed to mimic valid business activity, effectively hiding the systematic theft behind a veil of false paperwork.

U.S. Attorney Jason A. Reding Quiñones noted that the guilty plea highlights the government effort to defend the integrity of the financial system against sophisticated fraud. While the digital age often focuses on crypto hacks, this case serves as a reminder that traditional banking security remains a primary target for criminals.

Ortiz is scheduled for sentencing on November 5. He faces a maximum of 20 years in federal prison for the wire fraud charge, with a judge set to determine the final punishment based on federal guidelines.
