The $13.5 Billion Berkshire Hathaway Mystery
Warren Buffett's firm is buying stocks again, but a massive portion of their latest investments remains a total secret.
Berkshire Hathaway just made a major shift. After fourteen quarters of selling, the giant conglomerate is buying stocks again. While we know they poured $10 billion into Alphabet, there is still $13.5 billion in mystery purchases sitting in their portfolio. We expect to see exactly where that money went when the company files its next disclosure on August 14.
New leadership is taking charge as well. Chief executive Greg Abel is playing a larger role in decision making, notably pushing for $4.5 billion in company share buybacks during the quarter. The firm also closed big deals in the chemical and homebuilding industries, which helped drop their massive cash pile from a record $397.4 billion down to $365.5 billion.
This movement is significant for the wider market. Traders often use the Berkshire cash balance as a gauge for overall market fear or confidence. The fact that the firm is finally putting that cash to work is a signal that investors are feeling more comfortable taking on risk.
Even with these big moves, Berkshire has stayed away from digital assets. While their cash pile is now smaller, it remains larger than almost every crypto asset except Bitcoin. For now, we wait for the upcoming filing to see if the firm is leaning further into technology stocks or sticking to traditional industries.
