Could the U.S. Government Buy DOGE? A Wild Proposal Emerges

Dogecoin co founder Billy Markus recently floated a humorous idea on social media. He suggested the U.S. government should spend 1.2 trillion dollars to purchase Dogecoin and distribute it to Americans rather than issuing 5,000 dollar stimulus checks. This remark arrived just as political discussions around direct citizen payments began heating up ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.

While the suggestion was made in jest, it highlights the growing role of cryptocurrency in national policy debates. Economists generally warn that large scale cash injections can trigger inflation by boosting demand faster than the economy can supply goods. Some might wonder if a digital asset could serve as an alternative, but the scale of this specific proposal presents massive hurdles.

From a practical standpoint, the numbers do not add up for such a move. Dogecoin currently has a total market value of roughly 13.2 billion dollars. A purchase worth 1.2 trillion dollars would be nearly 90 times the total value of all existing DOGE. Attempting this would likely cause the price to spike to unreachable levels, making the plan impossible to carry out in any real world scenario.

For now, the U.S. maintains a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve established by presidential order, but that policy does not include Dogecoin. There is no current mandate for the government to stockpile meme coins. While the idea remains a playful jab at traditional economic policy, it serves as a reminder of how deeply cryptocurrency has entered the public conversation.
