A malicious actor recently managed to drain roughly 500,000 USDC from a victim on the Base network. While the theft was successful, the perpetrator failed to account for basic trading mechanics during the money laundering phase. Their attempt to swap the stolen stablecoins into wrapped ether left them vulnerable to automated market interference.

An MEV bot identified the transaction and executed a sandwich attack. This happens when a bot places trades before and after a large transaction to profit from the resulting price movement. Because the attacker did not set proper slippage protection, the bot was able to capture the majority of the value from the swap.

The attacker reportedly walked away with only 67 WETH, a small fraction of the original stolen amount. This serves as a reminder of how high speed trading bots operate on public chains. Traders and attackers alike must remain cautious about how they move funds across decentralized exchanges to avoid losing assets to bots.
