LIVEA recent study shows that artificial intelligence models used for financial planning hold a hidden bias regarding Bitcoin. Researchers discovered that when they adjusted specific internal settings within Google's Gemma 3 model, they could sway Bitcoin portfolio recommendations by several percentage points. This occurred even when the client profile and risk tolerance remained identical.
The findings suggest that AI does not view Bitcoin as a single, static asset. Instead, the models pull from various associations learned during training, such as volatility or digital settlement capabilities, depending on the context of the user's prompt. When a prompt mentions bank failures or autonomous software, the model shifts its internal logic to prioritize Bitcoin without the user necessarily intending for such a change.
This creates a significant challenge for investment firms that rely on AI to provide personalized advice. While humans are held accountable for their recommendations through regulatory frameworks and fiduciary duties, an AI can generate a professional rationale for a suggestion without the institution being able to trace how that specific conclusion was reached. The model appears to be personalizing advice, but it may simply be reacting to the phrasing of the input.
Investors and firms should remain cautious as these technologies enter the financial sector. The study highlights that because AI models do not store assets in simple, auditable files, their output can be highly sensitive to superficial adjustments. Until more transparent systems are developed, the machinery behind AI financial advice remains a black box.
