LIVEWall Street trading desks are discovering that gaining exposure to Bitcoin comes with hidden costs. A new study shows that firms taking similar market positions often pay different rates, depending on whether they use BlackRock’s IBIT options or CME futures contracts. This gap exists because these regulated products operate within separate financial systems that do not always talk to each other.
Professor Mindy Mallory of Purdue University analyzed hundreds of matched trading observations and found an average annual cost difference of over 2.5 percentage points. On a position worth 1 billion dollars, this discrepancy could amount to roughly 25 million dollars in extra annual financing costs. The study highlights that Bitcoin has entered traditional finance through multiple channels, but these channels remain siloed.
This pricing wedge persists because the two investment methods use entirely different infrastructure. Options on IBIT shares clear through the Options Clearing Corporation, while futures contracts go through the CME clearinghouse. Because capital and margin cannot move easily between these two distinct environments, the markets fail to align perfectly.
Investors should note that this cost difference is not a fixed fee and fluctuates significantly based on market conditions and contract maturity. It serves as a reminder that even as Bitcoin becomes a standard institutional asset, the lack of an integrated clearing system creates inefficiencies that traders must carefully monitor.
