Ethereum co founder Vitalik Buterin recently stacked his 2023 roadmap against the Ethereum Foundation's current Strawmap to show how much the network priorities have shifted. While many original concepts remain, several entirely new features have entered the picture. Privacy now receives first class attention, covering recent roots, keyed nonces, and privacy pools.

Quantum safety has also jumped up the priority list alongside scaling solutions built for a post quantum future. Meanwhile, developers pushed other items down the queue, including many EVM improvements and verifiable delay functions. Verkle trees stepped aside for a unified binary tree and PBT, while state expiry gave way to fresh state types.

Two main themes tie the recent updates together. The network aims to use specialized scaling mechanisms rather than trying to scale every single activity at once. Developers are also betting heavily on recursive STARKs and AI accelerated formal verification to keep the protocol secure across execution, consensus, and data layers.

The Strawmap maps out roughly one fork every six months leading up to 2029. Traders and developers should watch for these upcoming upgrades as Ethereum shapes its long term future around privacy, quantum resistance, and a leaner specification.
