LIVEThe United States national debt is closing in on the staggering milestone of $40 trillion, hitting $39.9 trillion recently. That works out to roughly $116,000 for every single American, which is enough to buy nearly two whole Bitcoins at current market prices. While cryptocurrency advocates often point to government debt as the ultimate reason to hold scarce digital assets, a fresh report from the Conference Board warns that these same mounting deficits are actively draining household budgets.
Rising national debt directly translates to higher borrowing costs, squeezing families, retirees, and small businesses alike. Interest payments alone now burn through more than $2.8 billion every single day. According to research models from the Conference Board, a severe fiscal default would cause small business loan payments to jump by 21.6%, student loans by 8.7%, and housing costs by up to 6.7%. Even under a normal baseline path, debt is projected to hit 154% of Gross Domestic Product by 2036, threatening vital programs like Social Security.
This leaves everyday retail investors in a tight spot when it comes to funding crypto purchases. Bitcoin trades near $64,594, meaning the average debt share per citizen towers over typical investment amounts. Historical data shows that the median crypto buyer usually puts around $620 into the market, which is less than a week of take home pay. Higher mortgage and loan expenses driven by government borrowing could easily consume that extra cash, leaving less room for speculative assets.
At the same time, rising Treasury yields are offering safer traditional returns that compete directly with crypto. Companies are issuing massive amounts of bonds, pushing 30 year Treasury yields to levels not seen since 2003. Traders will need to watch how these shifting bond yields and household financial pressures impact retail buying power in the months ahead.
