UCHealth Facing Lawsuit Over Meta Data Tracking

A major Colorado health provider, UCHealth, is being sued in a proposed class action lawsuit. The complaint claims the hospital used Meta’s tracking pixel on its website to share sensitive patient search data with the tech giant. According to the filing, this occurred on the site's doctor search feature and potentially within the patient portal.

The lawsuit argues that this practice violates HIPAA regulations by sending identifiable health information to a third party without patient consent. The plaintiff, Patrick Miller, alleges that UCHealth used this tracking tool to build user profiles for marketing and profit instead of protecting private data. The suit claims patients were never notified that their searches for medical conditions were being monitored.

UCHealth has denied the allegations and stated it prioritizes patient privacy. The provider plans to defend itself against these claims in court. Other healthcare institutions have faced similar legal battles in the past, with some cases ending in multi million dollar settlements.

While this case does not name Meta as a defendant, it highlights growing concerns about how web tracking tools interact with sensitive user data.
