Texas Tightens Rules for Data Centers Amid Power Grid Concerns
Texas is forcing data centers to disclose power and water usage as grid demand from AI projects hits record levels.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has issued five new transparency rules for data centers looking to connect to the state power grid. These facilities must now report their plans for public funding, power usage, water consumption, community impact, and ownership. This move aims to protect the state grid as connection requests reach massive levels.
Regulators are currently auditing all data centers in the connection queue. Any project that does not meet these new standards will be denied access to the Texas grid. The Governor emphasized that local communities and reliable power must take priority over the rapid expansion of these industrial sites.
This decision comes as ERCOT faces over 474 gigawatts of connection requests, with data centers making up nearly all of that demand. Because power hungry facilities often support AI and crypto mining operations, these new hurdles could slow down expansion plans in the region. Other states like New York are also taking similar steps to pause new data center construction.
Investors should watch how these regulations affect future site selection for mining operations and tech infrastructure. With public opposition rising across the United States, states may continue to implement stricter oversight for energy intensive projects.
