LIVEAuthorities in Texas have uncovered a massive financial scam that drained more than $250 million from over 200 elderly victims. Scammers posed as bank officials to convince seniors that their accounts were compromised. Victims were then told to withdraw their life savings, purchase physical gold bars or Bitcoin, and hand over cash to people posing as federal agents.
The stolen assets moved through shell companies in New Jersey before arriving at a Florida refinery. There, the gold was melted down into jewelry and sent overseas. The criminals converted the remaining proceeds into cryptocurrency and transferred the funds out of the country to hide the money trail.
Law enforcement agents seized over $130 million in gold during raids on jewelry stores. Investigators arrested Muzamil Ahmed at JFK airport as he tried to fly to Saudi Arabia. He now faces serious charges including elder financial abuse and money laundering.
Police remind the public that law enforcement officials never ask for gold, cash, or cryptocurrency. Traders and investors should share these warnings with older family members to protect them from similar fraudulent schemes.
