LIVESui is taking a proactive step toward quantum security by adopting two NIST approved signature schemes. These additions help ensure that accounts can utilize quantum safe keys while using the same recovery phrases currently held by users. This move addresses the risk that powerful future computers could theoretically use Shor's algorithm to crack standard elliptic curve cryptography used by most blockchains.
To manage these risks, the network is implementing two different mathematical approaches. For daily transactions, Sui is adopting ML DSA 65. For high value assets stored in smart contract vaults, the team is opting for hash based SLH DSA SHA2 128s. Using two distinct methods provides a safety net, as a weakness found in one would not necessarily compromise the other.
Crucially, users will not need to move their funds or change their wallet addresses to benefit from these protections. The network uses address aliases to allow for a smooth transition to quantum safe keys. While the signatures are larger than current standards, Sui has designed the verification process to keep network costs stable.
Quantum safe vaults are expected to hit the mainnet later this year, with broader account authentication features scheduled for early 2027. This rollout will be optional, allowing users to opt into higher security at their own pace without disrupting existing applications.
