LIVESenators Elizabeth Warren and Richard Blumenthal have officially asked the Securities and Exchange Commission to look into the TRUMP memecoin. The token was promoted by President Donald Trump just days before his inauguration. The senators argue that the project deserves scrutiny for potential fraud and unfair financial gain.
The case rests on a massive discrepancy between investor losses and presidential profits. According to data cited by the senators, nearly one million investors lost approximately 3.81 billion dollars on the token between January 2025 and late June. During that same window, the report notes that Trump earned 636 million dollars from the asset. The token has since fallen roughly 98 percent from its peak price of over 74 dollars.
This call for an investigation is playing out alongside tense negotiations for the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act. Lawmakers are currently deadlocked over ethics provisions that would restrict senior officials from participating in crypto projects. The bill is struggling to find enough support to pass a floor vote before the upcoming August recess.
The situation highlights the ongoing friction between political ethics and the digital asset sector. While the SEC previously stated that most memecoins do not qualify as securities, the pressure from high ranking senators could force a change in how federal regulators handle such projects moving forward.
