Scam Ring Stole 9 Million Dollars from Elderly Americans

A criminal network operating from Jamaica has been dismantled after stealing over 9 million dollars from more than 200 elderly victims in the United States. The scammers used unsolicited phone calls and text messages to tell seniors they had won luxury cars or massive cash prizes. To collect these fake rewards, victims were tricked into paying upfront fees or taxes.

Jordan Trought, a 30 year old man identified as a leader in the operation, pleaded guilty on June 1st to wire, mail, and bank fraud. Prosecutors state that Trought joined the ring in 2021 and personally handled the theft of 6 million dollars from his victims. He was arrested in Jamaica in August 2025 and extradited to the United States to face his charges.

The operation lasted for a full decade, from 2015 to 2025. In many instances, the scammers went beyond asking for fees and gained direct control of victims' bank accounts to drain their life savings. Trought now faces up to 30 years in federal prison and has agreed to pay over 6 million dollars in both restitution and forfeiture.

This case serves as a warning to the public about the dangers of unsolicited prize notifications.
