LIVEA group of traders managed to drain 8.2 million dollars from Polymarket using a clever timing trick. Security researchers found that 821 accounts manipulated bitcoin prices in the final five seconds before short dated contracts settled on the platform. By moving the price right at the deadline, these accounts guaranteed winning payouts on bets that should have gone the other way.
Polymarket has already taken action to fix this issue. The platform replaced instant price snapshots with time weighted averages to stop similar attacks in the future. This change makes it much harder for anyone to swing the final price of an asset with sudden, last second trades.
This incident highlights the security challenges facing prediction markets as they grow in popularity. Traders should watch how platforms handle settlement rules and oracle data going forward. As more money flows into these decentralized markets, developers will need to stay alert to protect against similar exploits.
