Poland Fails to Pass Crypto Law for Third Time

Poland continues to stand as the only European Union member state without a functioning framework for the Markets in Crypto Assets regulation. Lawmakers in the Sejm recently failed to override President Karol Nawrocki's veto for the third time, falling 25 votes short of the required three fifths majority. The president has consistently argued that the proposed legislation does not adequately address his concerns, famously stating that bad law does not become good simply because it passes repeatedly.

This legislative deadlock leaves Polish crypto firms in a state of uncertainty regarding future licensing and oversight. The bill was intended to grant the Financial Supervision Authority full power to regulate the sector, bringing Poland in line with the rest of the EU. Without this authority, the country remains disconnected from the broader regional standard, missing a key deadline in the process.

Political tensions have added weight to the situation as a massive fraud investigation into the exchange formerly known as BitBay continues. Finance Minister Andrzej Domanski has criticized the opposition for blocking the bill, arguing that a lack of clear rules puts Polish citizens at risk. Meanwhile, the president maintains that the proposed oversight measures are too broad and could force legitimate businesses to move their operations outside of Poland.

Looking ahead, the market must watch to see if lawmakers can draft a revised bill that addresses the president's specific objections. Until a compromise is reached, the Polish crypto sector will continue to operate without the clear regulatory protections that are currently in effect across the rest of the European Union.
