Peter Schiff is making headlines with a new investment strategy that has nothing to do with Bitcoin. The famous economist recently told his followers to start buying physical nickels instead of US Treasury Bonds. He argues that the copper and nickel content in each five cent coin is worth about 7.76 cents, which is a 55% premium over what you pay at the bank.

This idea is based on the rising cost of raw materials. Copper prices recently surged, and it now costs the US Mint more than 13 cents to produce and ship every single nickel. Schiff believes these coins are a better store of value than government debt. He also noted that the government might stop making nickels soon, just as it stopped producing pennies in late 2025.

There are some big legal and physical problems with this plan. Federal law currently bans melting down or exporting these coins, and people who break this rule can face $10,000 fines or prison time. Storage is also a hurdle, as a $100,000 investment would weigh ten tons. While the metal value is high on paper, the legal and logistical issues make this a very difficult trade to pull off.
