LIVEThe Optimism Foundation confirmed it will not guarantee the continuation of its token buyback program past its first 12 months. This news arrives as monthly purchase volume has dropped significantly, falling 87 percent from March to April. The program uses a portion of revenue from the Superchain to buy back OP tokens, but the foundation plans to reevaluate the strategy with community input after the current year concludes.
The decline in buying activity is notable given that these purchases serve as a primary source of demand for the token. In March, the foundation purchased 6.95 million tokens, but that figure plummeted to 926,000 in April. The foundation also declined to provide specific revenue forecasts, citing a policy against public projections for Superchain income.
Beyond the buyback uncertainty, the project faces pressure from its token supply schedule. Recent updates to the budget report indicate that 216 million tokens are still scheduled to enter circulation, which represents about 9 percent of the current market value. With the Retro Funding grant program also currently paused, two major mechanisms for token support remain in limbo.
Investors are keeping a close watch on how the token performs as these new supply tranches hit the market. While the price has shown some resilience recently, the lack of long term commitments regarding buybacks and grants adds a layer of caution for those tracking the project.
