LIVEBitcoin miner IREN recently closed its $625 million purchase of Mirantis, a move intended to round out its artificial intelligence platform. To finalize the deal, IREN issued 12.6 million shares. Shortly after the deal closed on August 3, the company filed a prospectus allowing the former Mirantis shareholders to sell nearly 12 million of those shares.
At the closing price of $39.75, this block of stock is worth roughly $476 million. While the filing does not mean these holders are selling immediately, it removes the legal restrictions that previously kept the shares off the market. Investors are watching closely to see if a significant number of these shares hit the open market, as such an influx could pressure the stock price.
IREN bought Mirantis to add software capabilities to its existing hardware business. By integrating Mirantis, the company now claims to offer a complete stack for AI workloads, including data centers, GPUs, and management software. This expansion is designed to attract enterprise clients who need fully managed cloud services.
Whether this acquisition will provide a long term boost to the stock remains to be seen. While the new software capabilities strengthen IREN as an AI cloud provider, the current overhang of nearly 12 million shares creates uncertainty for traders in the short term.
