Hashdex is officially closing its Bitcoin ETF, marking the first time a spot Bitcoin fund has been delisted from the New York Stock Exchange. The fund, which trades under the ticker DEFI, struggled to generate enough revenue to cover the costs of running a regulated investment product. While the fund charged a 0.25 percent fee, its relatively small asset base resulted in only $6,453 in fees during its last full quarter.

Investors have until August 17 to sell their shares on the exchange. For those who hold past this date, Hashdex plans to liquidate the fund's holdings and distribute the remaining cash to shareholders by August 28. The firm warned that the price of Bitcoin could change significantly during the liquidation process, which may affect the final payout amount.

While the fund successfully tracked the price of Bitcoin, it simply could not keep up with the massive scale of larger competitors. With giants like BlackRock managing billions, smaller funds face immense pressure to maintain profitability. Despite this closure, Hashdex continues to manage other products in the United States.

This situation highlights the difficulty for independent firms trying to compete in the crowded ETF market. Even as the total assets in the fund grew by 58 percent earlier this year, the total size remained too small to justify the ongoing operational costs. Traders are now watching to see if other smaller funds face similar pressure to close their doors.
