The WEMIX network faced a major security crisis after hackers exploited a compromised owner contract to mint 5.23 million WEMIX$ stablecoins out of thin air. Abnormal transactions began on July 26, bypassing the normal rules of the protocol and threatening the 1:1 design of the stablecoin.

Following the unauthorized minting, the attacker converted the newly created tokens into native WEMIX and bridged USDC.e across different chains like Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain. These funds were quickly swapped for assets such as ETH and USDT, and some amounts found their way onto centralized exchanges.

In response to the threat, the team behind the network took swift action by suspending all bridges, liquidity pools, trading pairs, and NFT marketplaces. Games with blockchain features were also restricted, while authorities and exchanges were contacted to freeze suspect addresses.

Traders and users should watch for official updates from the team regarding potential user losses, the final financial impact, and a timetable for reopening the network. This incident highlights the ongoing risks associated with contract ownership security across the crypto space.
