Georgia Man Faces Charges in $165 Million Crypto Ponzi Scheme
Federal authorities arrest Edward Zimbardi following a Fiji deportation over a massive crypto scam that promised huge monthly returns.
A Georgia resident is facing serious federal charges after authorities accused him of running a massive crypto Ponzi scheme worth $165 million. Edward Zimbardi appeared before a federal magistrate judge in Los Angeles following his deportation from Fiji. Prosecutors say he marketed a venture called The Crypto Program between June 2022 and August 2023, which falsely promised investors a guaranteed 25 percent return every single month.
According to court documents, more than 6,000 victims poured over $165 million into wallets secretly controlled by Zimbardi. Instead of using the funds as promised, he allegedly lost substantial sums on risky foreign currency trades and used new deposits to pay off earlier participants. Investigators also found that he spent at least $10 million on personal luxuries, including expensive vehicles, alimony, and a house for his son. The scheme collapsed in August 2023, prompting Zimbardi to spend time on the run across Hawaii and Fiji before local authorities finally deported him back to the United States.
This case highlights the growing scale of crypto fraud in the United States, arriving just as the FBI reports a sharp surge in digital asset scams and billions in total losses. A federal grand jury indicted Zimbardi on multiple counts of wire fraud and money laundering. The FBI is currently asking anyone who invested in The Crypto Program to come forward with information regarding their losses as the legal process moves forward.
