A Seoul court sentenced Delio CEO Jeong Sang ho to 15 years in prison on August 13. The ruling found him guilty of fraud linked to the loss of roughly 70 billion Korean won in customer cryptocurrency assets. The court ordered his immediate detention due to concerns that he might attempt to flee.

Prosecutors initially sought a 20 year sentence for a much larger fraud case, but the court excluded certain evidence. Judges ruled that police failed to follow proper legal procedures during a server raid, which invalidated some of the government claims. While the final conviction was smaller than the original charges, the court emphasized the severe financial damage caused to more than 1,000 victims.

Delio operated as a digital asset bank promising high returns on crypto deposits. The company fell into a crisis after it funneled customer funds into the yield platform Haru Invest. When Haru Invest collapsed and stopped withdrawals in June 2023, Delio suffered a liquidity crunch that led to a total breakdown of its services.

This ruling serves as a firm reminder of the risks associated with centralized lending platforms. Investors should watch for further developments in the recovery process for victims of the Delio bankruptcy.
