The crypto lending market hit $56.16 billion at the end of the second quarter, marking a 16.78 percent drop from the previous period. This downward trend has been consistent for three consecutive quarters, leaving the market about 40 percent below its peak from late 2025. Every major sector including centralized finance, decentralized finance, and stablecoin backed debt saw a decrease in volume during this period.

DeFi applications felt the sharpest impact, with outstanding borrows falling by over 27 percent to reach $20.43 billion. Centralized lending platforms also saw a contraction, partly due to a decrease in Tether usage within the lending space. Despite these drops, some firms managed to grow their loan books throughout the quarter.

While the numbers are down, market experts believe this trend is quite different from the rapid collapses seen in 2022. Instead of forced liquidations or major business failures, the current slide looks like a slow and steady reduction of risk. The market appears to be deleveraging in an orderly fashion rather than falling off a cliff.

There are early signs that this cooling period might be coming to an end. Data from late July shows that borrowing activity on DeFi platforms has started to climb back up. With futures open interest also showing a slight recovery, traders are keeping a close eye on these figures to see if the market has finally found its floor.
