The crypto market faced a brutal first half of 2026, losing $1.1 billion across 212 separate security exploits. While this total is lower than the same period last year, the sheer number of attacks reached a record high, occurring more than three times as often as they did throughout the entirety of 2025.

Most of the financial damage stemmed from operational security failures rather than simple code bugs. Stolen credentials, compromised private keys, and weak signer infrastructure accounted for roughly 74 percent of all stolen funds. North Korea linked groups remain the primary threat, allegedly responsible for over half of the losses, including major breaches at KelpDAO and Drift Protocol.

Ethereum and Solana projects bore the brunt of these attacks, losing $332 million and $326 million respectively. While Ethereum losses mostly involved smart contract vulnerabilities, Solana incidents were largely driven by compromised keys. Experts now suggest that firms must look beyond audits and start focusing heavily on who holds the keys to their systems.

Looking ahead, the industry is bracing for new attack vectors. Hackers are moving toward complex social engineering campaigns and even manipulating AI agents to approve unauthorized transactions. Investors and developers should prioritize tighter access controls to protect against these evolving digital threats.
