LIVESouth Korea's benchmark stock index, the KOSPI, is experiencing a massive downturn. In just 29 trading sessions, the index lost more total value than the entire market capitalization of Bitcoin. Since hitting an all time high on June 19, the market value of companies on the KOSPI dropped from roughly $5 trillion to $3.4 trillion. This collapse includes a staggering 10.8 percent single day loss, which triggered emergency trading halts.
The decline has been fueled by a sharp correction in major AI and semiconductor companies like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. These two firms account for nearly half of the index's value. Despite a slight recovery in the strength of the Korean won, the selling pressure remains intense, forcing the Korea Exchange to pause trading multiple times this year.
While Bitcoin has seen its own significant price drops recently, losing roughly half its value from its 2025 peak, the speed of the KOSPI crash is drawing global attention. The scale of the loss is historically significant, as a similar percentage drop in the S&P 500 would erase more value than the annual GDP of most major nations. Traders are now watching closely to see if the KOSPI can stabilize or if the broader market pressure will continue to drag down global investor sentiment.
