Coldcard Security Flaw Shows Hardware Wallet Testing Gaps

A critical bug hiding in Coldcard hardware wallets for five years is finally coming to light. The flaw remained unnoticed because auditors verified the presence of the random number generator code, but they failed to check if that code was actually being called during operation. This oversight meant the wallets were not functioning as intended for a long time.

Kraken security lead Nick Percoco pointed out that this issue exposes a major weakness in how the industry vets security devices. While auditors checked that the design included the right tools, they did not confirm those tools were active. It is a harsh reminder that having the right security features on paper is not the same as those features working in practice.

For crypto users, this serves as a wake up call regarding hardware security. Traders should keep an eye on how manufacturers change their audit processes to fix these gaps. Proper verification is just as important as the original hardware design.
