LIVEA serious security vulnerability in Coldcard hardware wallets has resulted in the theft of 1,816 BTC. Investigations show that a specific line of firmware code introduced in March 2021 caused the devices to bypass their dedicated randomness chips. This mistake effectively weakened the security of the wallet seeds.
Because the security chip was ignored, the generated private keys were much easier to predict than intended. An attacker managed to brute force these weak keys in just 41 minutes. This allowed the perpetrator to gain access to user funds and move the assets out of the compromised wallets.
This incident highlights why hardware wallet users must stay alert regarding firmware updates. While these devices are designed to keep assets secure, even a small error in the software can create a path for attackers to bypass protections. Users should ensure their devices are fully updated and monitor for official security patches.
Moving forward, the community is looking closely at how firmware audits are conducted. Trusting a hardware device is a common practice, but this event serves as a sharp reminder that technology can have hidden flaws. Traders should remain cautious and keep an eye on official communication from manufacturers regarding hardware integrity.
