Using physical dice to add extra security to a Coldcard hardware wallet can actually leave funds exposed if owners do not roll enough times. Security researcher Taylor Monahan recently explained that many early victims who lost funds were actually people trying to protect their seeds with dice rolls. Each roll of a standard six sided die adds only a small amount of randomness. Maker Coinkite states that it takes at least 50 rolls to reach a safe level, and 99 rolls for maximum security, but the device does not strictly block users from stopping early.

The danger increases when users choose the dice only seed option. This path ignores the internal hardware generator and relies entirely on the sequence of dice rolls. If a user stops too early, the seed lacks enough entropy, making it simple for attackers to crack. This issue adds to ongoing concerns following a major firmware bug from 2021 that weakened seed generation on older models, leading to significant thefts over recent years.

Experts note that updating firmware does not fix a seed that was already created with weak randomness. Industry trackers estimate that thousands of addresses have been compromised, with total losses climbing toward substantial figures. Security researchers warn that wallet holders will likely see ongoing risks in the coming weeks and months, reminding the crypto community to follow safety guidelines carefully.
