LIVECardano hit a critical regulatory benchmark on August 9 when its CME futures reached six months of trading history. This milestone is a key requirement for listing a spot ETF under current SEC framework standards. However, the path to a dedicated spot product took a hit when Grayscale withdrew its registration for a Cardano Trust ETF just two days prior.
Grayscale gave no specific reason for the decision, which also saw the firm drop applications for Polkadot and Hedera. Because Grayscale filed to withdraw the registration before it became effective, no assets were ever managed or sold under the proposed fund. The move leaves Cardano without a dedicated sponsor for a spot ETF at a time when the regulatory case for such a product finally looked promising.
While other investment vehicles exist, such as futures based ETFs or broad index funds, these do not provide the same direct exposure to Cardano. These products often rely on derivatives or hold such small amounts of the token that they fail to capture significant institutional demand. A dedicated spot ETF would have allowed brokerage investors to purchase ADA directly through a traditional investment wrapper.
Moving forward, the potential for a Cardano ETF now depends on whether a new sponsor decides to pick up the mantle. Because the six month futures history is already established, any future applicant could benefit from a faster regulatory review process. Whether investors show enough appetite to justify a new filing remains the biggest question for Cardano supporters.
