LIVESupporters of BTCPay Server have stepped up to fund a reward of up to three Bitcoins for the recovery of money taken in a recent security breach. The reward is set at ten percent of the recovered funds, with a maximum cap of three coins for a total recovery. The project directed this offer to the attacker and anyone else with useful details, setting up a secure contact address for tips.
Last week, hackers managed to grab Lightning Network admin credentials from vulnerable BTCPay Server setups. The team quickly released technical details and steps to fix the issue. In addition to the recovery fund, the BTCPay Server Foundation is donating smaller Bitcoin amounts to developer Craig Raw and the Bitcoin Red Team to thank them for responsibly reporting the security flaw.
Law enforcement, blockchain analysis firms, and major exchanges have reached out to help track down the stolen assets. Affected users who have not spoken up yet need to share their transaction details and report the incident to local authorities. Security experts warn that automated code analysis tools are making it easier for bad actors to find software bugs, meaning crypto projects must remain on high alert.
