Audit Questions DOGE $110 Billion Savings Claim

Government auditors are questioning the massive savings claimed by the Department of Government Efficiency. A new report from the Government Accountability Office reveals that the public ledger used by the initiative contains severe gaps, inaccurate numbers, and missing records behind its reported 110 billion dollar spending cuts.

The audit reviewed savings data reported from early 2025 through mid 2026. Out of more than 13,000 contracts marked as cancelled, over a quarter listed no identifying details at all, making them impossible to verify. Additionally, only 43 percent of contract savings came from contracts that were actually ended, while 96 percent of reported grant savings lacked basic calculation details.

Some claimed savings were completely overstated or never happened at all. For instance, the initiative claimed 1.7 billion dollars in savings on a military health tech contract that was never actually altered. In another case, lease savings were listed at 113 million dollars, but real savings totaled just 31.8 million dollars because many leases were already winding down beforehand.

Auditors noted that officials failed to respond to requests for information or interviews. The findings come after the initiative quietly ended its operations earlier this summer, with former lead Elon Musk ruling out similar future efforts.
