LIVEA new academic study reveals that users have lost approximately $575 million on the Ethereum and BNB chains due to address misuse. Researchers examined millions of transactions and identified over 65,000 cases where users mistakenly sent funds to the wrong locations. These losses often stem from users confusing testnet addresses with mainnet ones or interacting with addresses that do not actually contain the intended smart contract code.
The findings point to two primary types of mistakes. The first involves users sending assets to addresses they believe are smart contracts when no code is present, effectively trapping the funds. The second involves individuals using wallets with exposed private keys. Attackers are actively monitoring these patterns to move in and drain funds or hijack accounts using newer features like EIP 7702.
This research serves as a sharp reminder that a successful transaction status does not always mean your money reached its intended destination. Attackers are sophisticated enough to place malicious contracts at addresses where they see funds getting stuck. To stay safe, always verify contract addresses against official documentation and keep your testnet activity completely separate from your mainnet assets.
Moving forward, the study authors suggest that wallet providers should implement better safety warnings. Wallets could potentially flag addresses that lack code on the active chain or alert users when a private key has appeared in public databases. Until then, double checking every address remains your best defense against losing assets to these preventable errors.
