LIVEA recent study highlights how common human error leads to massive financial losses on the Ethereum and BNB chains. Researchers identified over 65,000 instances where users sent funds to unusable testnet addresses, old contract addresses, or accounts with compromised private keys. These simple mistakes resulted in a total loss of roughly 575 million dollars for the crypto community.
The findings show that sending assets to wallets with known security leaks caused the biggest portion of these losses. Users inadvertently sent over 100,000 ETH and 9,000 BNB to accounts where private keys had already been exposed to the public. Another significant portion of the total damage came from sending tokens to contract addresses that were never intended to receive them.
This report serves as a stark reminder of the risks involved when interacting with blockchain addresses. Because transactions are permanent, there is no way to reverse these errors once the crypto has been sent to an incorrect or unsafe wallet. To stay safe, always double check destination addresses and avoid reusing old contracts or wallets that may have been compromised in the past.
