The race to define how AI agents pay for services is heating up, but the CEO of wallet infrastructure firm Para believes there will not be one clear winner. While Coinbase has seen early success with its x402 standard due to its simplicity, different types of agent transactions will likely require different payment rails.

Currently, the market features multiple protocols, including x402, Google Agent Payments, and the Machine Payments Protocol backed by Stripe and Paradigm. Subramanian notes that x402 excels at high frequency microtransactions, such as pay per API call, which makes it attractive to independent developers. However, it may not be the ideal solution for larger or more complex commerce.

Subramanian expects the industry to follow a path similar to traditional finance, where different payment methods exist for different needs. Just as businesses use credit cards for some purchases and ACH transfers for others, she argues that AI agents will adopt various standards based on the specific requirements of a transaction, such as the need for dispute resolution or specific security features.

For developers and investors, the shift means moving away from looking for a single industry standard. Instead, the focus should be on which protocols are best suited for particular use cases. As governance structures for these standards continue to evolve, the market will likely prioritize flexibility over consolidation.
