Institutional investors increased their MSTR stakes in Q2 just as the firm pivoted its capital strategy toward stabilizing STRC shares.

LIVEMajor institutional players added a net $695 million to their MSTR positions during the second quarter. Big names like Goldman Sachs and BlackRock increased their stakes, bringing the total additions from top shareholders to roughly $1.2 billion, even after accounting for some firms that trimmed their holdings. Much of this buying happened through index funds and passive products that automatically adjust based on benchmark weights.
However, the market landscape for these investors has changed since June. The company is now redirecting capital to support STRC, a preferred stock that serves as a supplementary funding channel for its Bitcoin purchases. As STRC shares fell, the firm increased dividends and began using its own treasury to buy back STRC from the market, reversing the flow of capital that previously focused solely on acquiring new Bitcoin.
This shift creates a new dynamic for those who bought MSTR earlier this year. Investors originally backed a firm dedicated to aggressive Bitcoin accumulation. Now, those same shareholders are effectively invested in a business model that is prioritizing the rescue of its preferred shares.
Looking ahead, another hurdle may be on the horizon. MSCI is considering a rule change for non operating companies that could lead to Strategy being removed from certain global equity indexes. If this happens, it could trigger significant selling pressure from index funds that are required to follow these benchmarks, potentially complicating the stock's performance as the company continues its capital reallocation.
