LIVESilicon Valley investor Liron Shapira recently suggested there is a 50% chance that Bitcoin will lose half its value in the next two years. His theory relies on the idea that rapid advancements in AI could discover new ways to attack the security guarantees that Bitcoin users currently rely on. A drop of that magnitude would bring the price of Bitcoin down to approximately $40,000 from its current levels near $80,000.
Vitalik Buterin, the co founder of Ethereum, quickly disagreed with this forecast. Buterin stated that his own crypto holdings already represent a massive bet against such a collapse, as about 90% of his net worth is tied to the industry. He argues that the probability of AI actually breaking Bitcoin's core cryptographic hash algorithms is extremely small.
Buterin noted that even if security concerns arise, the Bitcoin ecosystem has the ability to adapt. He explained that developers and node operators could update the network infrastructure to handle many types of attacks without needing a complete overhaul of the underlying math. He also highlighted that Ethereum is already prioritizing quantum safety in its long term roadmap.
While the debate between Shapira and Buterin centers on security, other industry figures have shared different concerns. Some analysts worry that AI could cause broader market sell offs due to credit stress or competition for resources like electricity. For now, Bitcoin continues to trade near $80,000 as investors monitor whether these theoretical risks influence long term market sentiment.
