Visa Crypto Chief Says PIX and Stablecoins Are Not Rivals
Visa executive Antonia Souza explains why instant payment rails and dollar tokens work together instead of fighting.
Stablecoins and Brazil's PIX payment system are partners rather than competitors in Latin America. According to Antonia Souza, who leads digital currencies for Visa in the region, the two systems solve different financial needs. PIX handles daily routine payments inside Brazil, while stablecoins focus on cross border money transfers and dollar savings. The only exception is in nations without a fast local payment network, where peso tokens help fill the gap for everyday transactions.
Souza also shared strong numbers from Visa's ongoing crypto operations. The company's stablecoin settlement pilot has reached a seven billion dollar annualized run rate, letting financial firms settle global transactions directly in digital tokens without converting to fiat currency. Visa currently powers more than 140 live stablecoin card programs around the world, with major fintechs leading the push in Latin America.
Traditional banks are showing heavy interest, but they still have concerns about security, fraud prevention, and legacy system integration. Visa aims to bridge that gap by offering secure and scalable infrastructure. Looking to the future, Souza expects stablecoins to merge with artificial intelligence, creating autonomous agents that make payments on behalf of users.
Traders should watch how regional regulators handle crypto integration, especially as countries like Brazil move ahead with clear frameworks while others lag behind. The steady growth of cross border token use points to long term adoption across major markets like Mexico and Argentina.
