A worrying trend is growing across the digital asset space as violent physical attacks, often called wrench attacks, reached 52 incidents in the first half of 2026. This represents a 33 percent increase compared to the same period last year. These incidents involve criminals using threats or force to coerce victims into handing over private keys and passwords.

The financial impact of these crimes has grown significantly. Total losses, which include ransoms and stolen funds, jumped from 10.5 million dollars in the first half of 2025 to over 124 million dollars during the first six months of 2026. Experts point to the increased availability of personal data from recent public sector security breaches as a primary reason attackers can effectively locate and identify high value targets.

France currently stands as the center of these activities, accounting for 33 of the 52 recorded incidents. Security analysts believe the country is targeted because of its dense network of crypto founders, investors, and public industry events. Criminal networks often utilize local recruiters to carry out physical operations against male investors, entrepreneurs, and influencers between the ages of 20 and 35.

Market participants should remain cautious about sharing their involvement in crypto in public or on social media. Securing private keys and avoiding the public display of personal wealth are increasingly important steps for individual safety. Analysts are watching to see if law enforcement can disrupt these organized networks to prevent further escalation in the second half of the year.
