US Diesel Hits Record High as Energy Crisis Grips Markets
US diesel prices hit an all time high of $5.820 per gallon as war costs and low inventories strain the broader economy.
US diesel prices reached an all time high of $5.820 per gallon on Thursday, topping the previous record set back in June 2022. GasBuddy data confirmed the new peak, arriving as US distillate inventories hit their lowest seasonal levels in decades. Refiners are running at 98 percent utilization, but stockpiles remain well below the five year average.
Researchers at Brown University estimate the total consumer burden has reached $97.5 billion since the conflict began in February. Diesel accounts for a massive portion of that total, with prices climbing nearly 58 percent from pre war levels. Analysts point out that higher shipping costs will likely push food and retail prices higher for everyday shoppers.
Traders and investors are watching these energy shocks closely because persistent inflation could force central banks to keep interest rates high. With peak demand seasons for harvest and winter heating still ahead, market watchers will look to the next inventory report on September 10 for signs of relief.
