The United States federal debt has officially surpassed $40 trillion, yet Bitcoin remains roughly 37 percent below its previous all time high. This disconnect challenges the long standing theory that rising government debt and fiat currency weakness should automatically drive investors toward scarce assets like Bitcoin. Instead, the market is currently navigating a complex second phase of this trend.

Analysts note that the narrative shifted earlier in 2026 when market expectations for Federal Reserve policy turned cautious. With the appointment of Kevin Warsh as Fed chair, traders became less convinced that the central bank would aggressively print money to fix fiscal stress. This uncertainty caused Bitcoin to lose some of its appeal as a hedge, keeping it tethered to traditional crypto cycle patterns rather than macro economic trends.

Recent moves by the Treasury to increase liquidity support buybacks have sparked some life back into the debasement trade. While these buybacks are not the same as quantitative easing, they suggest that policymakers are becoming sensitive to high borrowing costs. Bitcoin saw a 25 percent gain in August as these concerns surfaced, but high real yields on government bonds continue to act as a hurdle for crypto investors.

Looking ahead, the market is waiting to see if real yields begin to fall while fiscal pressure remains high. If borrowing costs create enough stress to force policy changes, Bitcoin could finally regain its status as a primary hedge against government debt. For now, the asset remains caught between traditional market cycles and the growing reality of the national fiscal outlook.
