LIVEU.S. Bank has successfully completed a cross border payment pilot using its proprietary stablecoin, USBDC. The test moved funds between the bank's own entities in North America and Europe using the Stellar public blockchain. While the transfer was successful, the bank noted that this was strictly an intercompany pilot and not a transaction involving retail customers or external merchants.
The trial focused on essential financial controls like minting, redemption, freezing, and clawback functions. By testing these capabilities, the bank aimed to see if it could maintain strict regulatory compliance while utilizing the speed of a public blockchain. All actions remained integrated with the bank's existing core infrastructure for risk and compliance.
This pilot is a significant step for institutional blockchain integration, but it does not mean the stablecoin is ready for public use. U.S. Bank has not yet announced a timeline for client access or a broader commercial rollout. Moving forward, the industry will watch to see if the bank expands these capabilities to liquidity management or treasury operations with outside partners.
