LIVEMemecoins can change fortunes overnight, but they often leave traders with severe regrets. One crypto investor recently learned this lesson the hard way, selling a bag of tokens for a small profit just days before the asset exploded into a multi million dollar valuation. On August 13, an on chain trader picked up nearly 38 million tokens of a memecoin named Niu Lai for a tiny investment of $148.
After holding the asset for just one day, the trader sold the entire stack across 23 separate transactions. The sales brought in roughly $1,600, locking in a quick gain of over $1,400. While an 864 percent return sounds impressive on paper, the timing could not have been worse for this wallet. The market capitalisation of the token went on to surge past $48 million, meaning those exact tokens were soon worth about $1.3 million.
The massive price rally was fueled by the token tying its identity to a viral Chinese animated film that became a surprise box office success. Following the film's popularity, the coin landed listings on several major exchanges including HTX, MEXC, and LBank. Daily trading volume climbed to $60 million as the holder count expanded to nearly 32,000 wallets.
Traders watching this asset should monitor whether the hype around the movie can sustain the coin against heavy selling pressure from early investors. While exchange listings helped drive the initial momentum, memecoin markets change rapidly, and new buyers must carefully weigh the risks before jumping in.
