The Netherlands Moves Billions in Gold to London
The Dutch central bank is shifting over 13 billion dollars in gold reserves to boost liquidity and emergency readiness.
coinbeat.newsThe Dutch central bank, De Nederlandsche Bank, recently moved 86 tonnes of its gold reserves from vaults in the United States and Canada to London. This operation involved selling 59 tonnes in New York to buy equivalent amounts in London, alongside moving 27 tonnes physically from its own vaults. The goal is to ensure the gold is more tradable if a crisis hits.
Following these changes, London now holds 32.1 percent of the total Dutch gold stock, while New York and Ottawa hold 18.5 percent each. The total gold holdings for the Netherlands remain steady at 612.4 tonnes. Officials state the move is a precaution against growing geopolitical instability.
Governor Olaf Sleijpen noted that while they hope never to use these reserves, the shift is about increasing national resilience. London was chosen for the relocation because it offers the fastest access to gold during an emergency. Gold currently trades at 4,480 dollars per ounce, making this a significant strategic adjustment for the nation.
