Through its Wallet Development Kit, or WDK, the company is providing tools for machines to sign transactions autonomously. The setup allows for programmable money that connects humans and AI, but it places the responsibility for security and spending limits directly on the developers building these systems.
At the core of this system is a local wallet interface that uses a daemon to hold the keys once a human unlocks the session. On macOS and Linux systems, any process running under the same user account can trigger transactions while the session is active. Tether notes this is a typical trade off for hot wallets. Because the daemon does not ask for fresh permission for every payment, the security of the funds depends on how the developer sets up the wallet and manages access.
Developers have a few ways to add protections. While the basic tools allow for simple commands, the WDK SDK includes features for setting specific allow and deny rules for recipients or transaction amounts. However, these are not automatic. Developers must actively manage these rules, including tracking cumulative spending over time to enforce daily budgets. The SDK does not track these totals automatically.
