LIVEStrategy, the firm formerly known as MicroStrategy, recently raised $333.7 million through common stock sales. However, none of this capital went toward buying Bitcoin. Instead, the company directed these funds toward paying dividends on its Series A preferred stock, buying back preferred shares, and bolstering its cash reserves to $4.8 billion.
This move marks a two month stretch where the company has paused its aggressive Bitcoin accumulation. The firm currently holds 840,447 Bitcoin, a total that has remained unchanged since June 21. Over the same two month period, the company has actually sold nearly 7,000 coins to manage its financial obligations.
Shareholders are starting to voice concerns as MSTR stock has dropped about 35 percent over the last two months, a steeper decline than Bitcoin's 10 percent dip during the same window. Investors questioned management during an August 17 Q&A session about why common equity is being used to support preferred securities instead of buying more Bitcoin.
CEO Phong Le and executive chairman Michael Saylor defended the decision, describing the current phase as an investment period. They argue that building a stronger credit franchise and maintaining cash reserves will provide the company with the long term stability needed to eventually return to heavy Bitcoin buying. For now, the company is prioritizing balance sheet health over immediate expansion of its Bitcoin holdings.
