Solana AI Payments Risk Leaving Merchants Unpaid

Solana recently highlighted a new payment channel system capable of processing over one million payments per second. This technology is designed to let AI agents conduct high frequency transactions by using off chain authorizations. By avoiding a separate blockchain transaction for every delivery, the system promises major efficiency gains for digital services.

However, the design creates a gap between speed and security. Because payments are verified off chain, merchants and customers face risks if a session terminates abruptly. If an operator stops responding, merchants may find it difficult to collect their final payments before the recovery window closes. The system relies on signed vouchers, and failing to record these on the blockchain quickly can result in lost funds.

Recovery becomes a logistical hurdle if communication breaks down. Customers can initiate a forced closing process, but this triggers a waiting period of roughly 15 minutes. During this time, users might need to pay additional transaction fees to secure their refunds or finalize settlements. If a merchant does not manage to submit their final bill before this grace period ends, they risk losing out on their earnings entirely.

While the technology shows potential for handling massive amounts of data, the current benchmark reflects test conditions rather than real world commercial stability. Traders and developers should watch how these payment channels handle data storage and recovery, as secure record keeping remains the biggest challenge for this high speed model.
